Hi — I'm the reason this site exists.
A few years ago I decided to go camping for the first time. I spent three weeks reading gear reviews, watching YouTube videos, and getting more overwhelmed with every click. Every article assumed I knew what a "vestibule" was, or that I cared about pack weight measured in grams.
Turns out, my first trip was a state park campground twenty minutes from home. I didn't need any of it. I just needed someone to tell me plainly: bring a tent, bring a sleeping pad (please, a sleeping pad), bring a rain jacket, bring food, and go.
TrailStart is the site I wish I'd found back then. Nothing here is written for "the gear community." It's all for the person Googling "am I going to be cold?" at 11pm the night before their first trip.
What I'm not
I'm not a wilderness guide, a former park ranger, or an ultralight backpacker. I'm a normal person who's now done enough beginner camping trips to know which advice actually helps and which is gear-nerd noise.
How I pick products
Everything I recommend is a real product I'd suggest to a friend who's never camped before. I focus on gear that's forgiving, easy to use, and reasonably priced — because your first trip shouldn't cost $2,000.
The site earns a small commission when you buy through my Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. That's how I keep it running. Full disclosure here.
